TANDUK ALAM

-Sulawesi Selatan

Tanduk Alam was a pious young man from the land of Palembang. He sailed to the land of Banggai in Central Sulawesi. There, he worked as a goldsmith. One of his customers was the King of Banggai named Adi Cokro. Besides making jewelry, Tanduk Alam also often taught religion and gave good advice to the people of Banggai. Because of this, King Adi Cokro liked Tanduk Alam. For him, Tanduk Alam made his people's lives better.

One day, there was an uproar in the palace. The king's daughter was missing. King Adi Cokro mobilized four of his servants to search for her. It turned out that the king's daughter had been kidnapped by the Tobelo people and hidden on Sago Island. The Tobelo people did this on the orders of the King of Ternate who wanted to control the Banggai kingdom.

King Adi Cokro ordered his four servants to rescue his daughter. With a complete army, they sailed to Sago Island. But as it turned out, Tobelo's troops were very numerous. The four servants were unable to free Putri and were forced to retreat back to Banggai.

“Forgive us, sire. They are far more numerous than we are,” said one of the servants. King Adi Cokro just sat pondering sadly.

Suddenly, one of the servants named Tano Bonunungan said, “What if we ask for Tanduk Alam's opinion? He is a wise man. Maybe he can help us.”

Tanduk Alam was willing to help the King. He would go to Sago Island, but he didn't want to bring an army. He didn't want a war.

"We will accompany you,” pleaded the four helpers. Tanduk Alam agreed.

Arriving at Sago Island, only the Tanduk Alam entered the island. The four servants just stood guard on the boat, ready in case Tanduk Alam ran into danger.

“Tanduk Alam, is it not dangerous if you go alone?” asked one of the helpers.

“With God's permission, I'm sure I can save Putri,” replied Tanduk Alam.

After saying that, Tanduk Alam prayed, and suddenly a miracle happened. Tanduk Alam's body disappeared. With ease, he walked past the Tobelo people guarding the house where Putri was hidden.

Tanduk Alam approached the window of Putri's room. Slowly, she opened the window and threw Putri with the small twig she was carrying.

Putri woke up.

“Shhh... Putri, listen to me. My name Tanduk Alam, your father's messenger. You cannot see my body, but I will set you free. Come here, to this window,” whispered Tanduk Alam.

Putri obeyed. As she approached the window, she felt her hand being held by someone.

“Close your eyes,” whispered Tanduk Alam again.

In an instant, the Putri’s body disappeared. When she opened her eyes, she was already on a boat with her father's four servants, and also Tanduk Alam.

The four servants were equally surprised to see Tanduk Alam and Putri suddenly appear beside them.

In a hurry, they rowed the boat and left Sago Island.

King Adi Cokro happily welcomed his daughter. As a token of his gratitude, he offered Tanduk Alam a gift.

“If Your Majesty pleases, I only want a piece of land for me to plant fruits,” pleaded Tanduk Alam.

His simple request was immediately granted by King Adi Cokro.

A few years later, Tanduk Alam had managed to turn the land into a lush orchard. The orchard not only brought benefits to Tanduk Alam himself, but also to the people around him. Until the end of his life, Tanduk Alam remained in the land of Banggai.
